The biggest granite cairn in Sri Lanka

The temple named Sri Vivekaramaya was founded in 1874 at Meegahathenna. Before that, there was not a temple in Meegahathenna. People used to go to the temple at Polgampala which is called Shailashekararamaya. Later, people in Meegahathenna built Sri Vivekaramaya. There is an inscription in the temple which is mentioned about the origin of the temple, founders and the donors.  The first Thero of this temple was Ven. Halpe Sonuththara Thero.

The most important and special thing in this temple is the granite cairn. Since the Anuradhapura and Polonnaru eras granite cairns were built but, it was only a few. The granite cairn in Sri Vivekaramaya was built in 1888. As of today, this granite cairn is about 133 years old and it is considered as the biggest granite cairn in Sri Lanka.
